Combating Whooping Cough outbreak

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Health officials are targeting a specific age group in a new approach to combat an outbreak of Whooping Cough.

Fresno County health experts say this month the epidemic has slowed, but they expect a surge once kids go back to school.

The Centers for Disease Control is now urging anyone around young children to get vaccinated -- especially those who fall between the ages of 11 and 64 years old.

As of Tuesday, Fresno County had 325 reported Whooping Cough cases. So far this year, one infant has died in Fresno County and five children have died statewide.

Health officials hope the new adult vaccine will cut down on the number of Whooping Cough cases.

Expecting mothers, fathers and siblings are encouraged to get vaccinated right after delivery. For young children a series of five vaccines is needed; adults and teenagers only have to be vaccinated once.
