Fresno, CA (KFSN) -- A massive turnout at an H1N1 flu clinic in central Fresno had people waiting for hours to get vaccinated and forced the health department to go back on its word that no one would be turned away.
The first H1N1 flu clinic in the city of Fresno attracted a crowd so large it wrapped around Manchester Center. The first person in line got the mall at 5 a.m. and at one point, the wait was about four hours for a vaccine.
The long wait prompted Fresno County health officials to start turning people away at 5:30 p.m., even though the clinic wasn't scheduled to close until 7.
"We're excited because people are getting the message and getting vaccinated. But on the other hand, we're hoping they don't think this is the last clinic site. There are going to be more clinics," said David Luchini with the Fresno County Health Department.
Those who were turned away were given flyers with information about other clinics planned this month. Health officials said there are still plenty of doses available and they are expecting even more shipments soon.
Hundreds also lined up for the Swine Flu vaccine in Merced County Wednesday.
About 300 people were already waiting at the Los Banos Fairgrounds before the clinic even began.
Staff members administered both the H1N1 flu shot and the nasal spray vaccine to those considered to be at high risk for the illness.
Organizers are hoping to have enough vaccine available for everyone by December.
