Charges Dropped Against MySpace Fight Mom

Monday, February 05, 2007

This past summer, a video appeared on MySpace showing two kids fighting and one mother appearing to encourage her daughter's behavior.

Police say Syreeta Fuller watched as her daughter beat up a 13-year-old girl. At first, Fuller faced 5 charges ranging from battery to child endangerment. But in court on Monday, the DA dropped most of those charges and the victim's mother is shocked and angry.

It's a Fresno street fight caught on tape. The brawl was posted in April on MySpace.com. Police say Syreeta Fuller (in the pink), stood by and appeared to be encouraging her daughter to throw the punches.

Diane Thrower's 13 year old daughter was on the losing end of the fight and she says, "As far as I'm concerned the legal system does not work." Thrower sat in court as the state agreed to drop 4 charges against Syreeta Fuller. Fuller did not appear in court on Monday, but plead no contest to contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Thrower believes with the crime caught on tape that Fuller should face all five charges. Thrower says, "You can't discipline your own child, but somebody can beat your child and get away with it!"

ABC-30 Legal Analyst Tony Capozzi says, "What you see on tape maybe is maybe not everything.... maybe other things have gone on." He says the DA's office might have agreed to the plea deal, because it may have been difficult to prove all the charges. But in court, the judge said Fuller also violated her probation in connection to this case. Capozzi points to that statement and the judge receiving a copy of the MySpace.com fight as a good indication of how he will sentence fuller. Capozzi says, "I think he wants to see the actual incident himself. To ensure the kind of sentence he's going to give in this case. This tells me this defendant is going to get some time in jail."

The DA in court declined to comment about this case. Diane Thrower plans to be in court when Fuller is sentenced later this month.

Thrower tells us her daughter, the victim in the tape, is doing ok, but having a tough time adjusting in school.
