03/12/2007 (KFSN) -- Senator John McCain, (R) Arizona, was in the Valley on Monday in support of his presidential campaign. He appeared with Fresno Mayor Alan Autry, who announced his support for McCain.
". . .and that's my endorsement for Senator McCain, " said Mayor Autry.
Supporters of John McCain held a breakfast at $500 a plate at the Piccadilly Inn. That event was closed to the media.
Former Secretary of State Bill Jones and state Senator Jeff Denham were among the members of a 70 person committee supporting McCain's bid for president in California.
McCain says his understanding of Valley issues sets him from his Republican challengers.
"I'm the western candidate right now. I understand the western issues better. Agriculture, growth& California must be in play for any Republican nominee for president of the United States to achieve the goals of the President of the United States. I intend to put California in play."
McCain is the third presidential nominee to visit the Valley after Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani and Democrat John Edwards. Republican Mit Romney will be at Harris Ranch this week.
California lawmakers are working to move the presidential primary in the state from June to February, so that the state is no longer ignored in presidential politics. All it needs is Governor Schwarzenegger's signature and he has indicated that he supports that plan.
