Free Bus Service Will Help Kids Visit Mothers in Prison

Monday, March 26, 2007

A first of its kind bus service is being offered to reunite Valley prison inmates with their children.

The Chowchilla Family Express offers free rides to and from the Chowchilla Women's Prisons from all over California. The first bus brought visitors up on Sunday from Los Angeles.

Organizers say 90% of California's female inmates have children, and keeping the families intact is critical to rehabilitation.

Wendy Still, CA Dept. of Corrections, says, "It's been researched many times and when the women and the children form that connection, it gives them a motivation to improve their lives, to overcome the challenges and the obstacles they've faced."

Six buses a month will bring visitors from different cities in northern and southern California.

The state is paying $400,000 for it with money from the Department of Corrections.
