American Idol Winners Help Valley Christians Celebrate Easter

Monday, April 09, 2007

American Idol season 2 winner, Ruben Studdard, sang to a large crowd at Northside Christian Church in northeast Fresno. He's the latest celebrity paid by the church to perform at Easter services, in hopes of drawing in new members.

Studdard also spoke with teens telling them action is more important than words. He says, "I think living a clean lifestyle and being a good person is more of a ministry for some people than anything."

And in downtown Fresno, another American Idol finalist visited a Valley church to help out in a benefit for victims of the Valley Freeze.

On Sunday, George Huff headlined the concert of hope at Cornerstone Church. The church sold tickets to the concert to raise money for Operation Hope which benefits victims of the January freeze.

So far, Operation Hope has handed out about 8,000 boxes of food to families in Orange Cove.

Other Valley residents celebrated Easter by going to mass. At Holy Spirit Catholic Church in northeast Fresno, about 700 people attended Easter services.

Fresno parks were also packed yesterday. 2,500 cars filled Woodward Park and twice that number of cars filled Roeding Park. Both parks had to close when they reached capacity, which meant police turned cars away.
