A History Making Moment At A Valley Prom

Sunday, May 13, 2007

It's the second time a transgender teen has been in the royal court for a valley prom this year, but this time, the results are much different.

Johnny 'Crystal' Vera was named prom queen Saturday night as his fellow students cheered him on. Now he is hoping his victory will help spread a larger message.

Getting ready for prom started early for prom queen candidate Johnny Vera. He spent the morning getting hair and nails done while also dealing with pre-prom jitters.

Johnny is a transgender teen. He was born a boy but wants to be known as a girl. Johnny has already been named homecoming prince twice at Roosevelt High, but recently set his sights on a new title, prom queen.

Saturday night he got his wish. But Johnny says going after the title was more than about just being able to wear the crown. He says he hopes he can inspire others to be themselves.

It was hard to find a bigger smile than Johnny Vera's just after he was crowned. He not only achieved his goal, he also made Roosevelt history.

Just a few weeks ago, a transgender teen from Fresno High ran for prom king. Cynthia Covarubias didn't win but Johnny says her candidacy paved the way for him to run. Now he hopes his reign will open doors for transgender teens everywhere.
