Clovis Police Have New Robot on the Force

Tuesday, August 07, 2007

The Clovis Police Department has a new robot on its force to serve as an extra set of eyes, and it didn't cost the city a dime.

City officials introduced a new tactical surveillance robot to the public Monday. The robot can travel through all kinds of terrain and climb stairs and curbs, all while providing officers with a 360 degree view of what's going on.

The robot was paid for by Anlin Industries and Pelco provided the surveillance equipment. Teens from Clovis' CART school actually designed and built the robot.

Robot builder Brannon Vidmar says, "It came to me as a really exciting project. It could actually potentially save a life." Fellow robot builder Dennis Ngo says, "This is my first time doing this kind of project. It's very exciting."

The Clovis Police Department says the robot will be used in tactical situations, such as when someone or something can't be seen from around a corner.
