Valley Man Arrested in EBay Scam

Thursday, April 24, 2008

North valley authorities arrested a man they say scammed at least half a dozen people on the website, EBay.

Merced County sheriff's deputies say Ben Haag took money for items he posted for sale online, but never sent the products he promised.

Authorities say Haag made about $3,000 by pretending to sell these items under the name, "5150elite." Detectives tracked him down after several people filed reports with the federal internet fraud complaint center.

Now the sheriff's department is warning other online shoppers to watch for red flags, like anyone who will only accept money orders. Deputy John Mussotto, Merced County Sheriff's Dept., says "When you get something like that, you have no protections, as far as if you don't receive your item, they've got your money order and you're pretty much out luck when it comes to getting your money back."

Deputies say it's best to use a credit card or PayPal when making a purchase online.
