How to Handle Money 101

11/1/2008 Fresno, CA, USA (KFSN) -- Teenage girls in the valley are about to get a big helping hand in handling money.

Teachers and mentors who deal with mostly high school girls studied techniques to teach about personal finances today. They're hoping to give girls a better idea of how to make smart financial decisions, especially in these tough economic times.

The most important lesson may be to make sure you don't get yourself into a lot of debt while you're still young.

Janice Peterson, Fresno State Economist, says "Young people today are carrying a lot of credit card debt and it can have consequences for them for a long time. They're starting their life with a lot of credit card debt they have to pay off. It can hurt their credit rating. It can make it harder for them to get other types of loans in the future."

Fresno State economic experts taught Saturday's workshops. The next step is for teachers to take the lessons into the classroom.
