FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Most local farmers escaped major frost damage overnight ... according to Ag officials. Some isolated areas did get hit.
The leaves of some green bean plants growing west of Sanger were burned by the intense cold. For Fresno farmer Chalee Xiong it was a sleepless night. He said he found plants covered in a layer of frost.
This is the peak season for harvesting green beans. Xiong says the frost devastated his top crop. "It's very sad because small farmers rely on these crops here just like people have their regular job," said Xiong.
Fresno County Small Farm Advisor Michael Yang spent the day inspecting damage in Valley fields. "You almost can't tell until you get closer to the beans. You can see the burning and dry leaves and all that and it's pretty bad," said Yang.
Xiong says it will take a few days to know the full extent of the damage but believes he may have lost half of his crop. Xiong explained, "I rely on this crop here as my main source of income and if I don't have this here I don't know how I'm going to carry on to the next season. I don't have money to start with."Xiong feared the frost because his fields sit lower than most.
