Snow Shutdown Schools in the Foothills

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A deserted playground at recess was the first sign of trouble at Pine Ridge School in Auberry. A power outage left the hallways dark and forced administrators to close the school for the day.

Schools in the foothills saw mostly rain, but they're keeping an eye on snow levels. Sierra Unified has just three buses that pick up students in homes above 4,000 feet and those are the routes that are causing trouble.

Caltrans plowed snow and slush off Highway 168, but drivers still needed chains. Even with chains, some drivers had serious trouble going uphill. A woman almost got hit by a Caltrans snow plow.

Those who made it to Shaver Lake saw a thick layer of snow over the roads and everything else. Business was slow at Bob's Market, but owner Rochelle Sargentini said the snow will eventually be good for business.
