High heat and unhealthy air; cooling on the way

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As the brief heat wave comes to a close ... doctors are saying since air quality remains in the red zone, it's best to stay indoors a while longer.

A few figure skaters escaped the scorching temps and inhaled some crisp, cool air at Fresno's Gateway Ice Center. They practiced their technique and got exercise at the same time. The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District says air quality is especially poor this week because of an increase in traffic due to the start of the school year. Doctors say wait a little longer to resume outdoor activity.

"I would say this weekend is a great time to get out and exercise. To be active. I'm always concerned once the kids go back to school with all the homework they become too sedentary and they do too much sitting," said Dr. William Ebbeling.

This weekend as temperatures dip into the 80's, air quality will also improve.

Several local cities are reopening their cooling centers Thursday today to help people stay out of the heat.

In the City of Fresno call 621-CITY (2489) for cooling center times and locations. Four locations will be available from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday. You can get a free ride on any city FAX bus.

In the South Valley, the City of Visalia's Transit Center has been converted to a temporary cooling location. The center is open until 10 p.m. For more information you can call the fire department at 713 -4600.
