Community center opens in Tower District

Sunday, February 13, 2011

Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community celebrated the opening of a community center in the Tower District.

The facility--at Van Ness and Olive--features a conference area, and a library offering books and other materials to check out.

Visitors can also be connected to other resources in the community.

Organizers say this space is meant to help members of the LGBT community feel more accepted.

"With the rash of suicides not just in the Central Valley but across the country, I think it needs to be even more......youth have a space they can come and drop into and talk about what their day is going like...and see other like minded people so they now they're not alone," Jason Scott said.

Gay Central Valley is looking for more volunteers so the facility can extend its hours during the week.

For now, it's only open four days a week.
