Japanese culture celebrated at Woodward Park

Sunday, May 22, 2011

A Fresno festival celebrated Japanese culture and art Sunday including living artforms.

Bonsai trees of all shapes and sizes were on display inside the Shinzen Japanese Garden at Woodward Park as part of the garden's spring festival and Bonsai show.

The festival also included Bonsai demonstrations showing all of the meticulous care that goes into shaping and cultivating the minature trees.

Bonsai hobbyists say the trees are actually pieces of art, that are constantly changing.

"We're trying to evoke an emotion in the people that look a the tree. Very much the same way someone who paints a picture or creates a sculpture. It's just another artform... A living artform," Dr. Michael Saul said.

Other Japanese artforms were also on display Sunday including paintings and arts and crafts.

The weekend festival also included Japanese food and Haiku poetry readings.
