Animal control officers found the horses malnourished and with little water or food nearby. It could be several weeks before the horses are nursed back to health.

The Kings County Animal Shelter says many people don't realize the time and costs it takes to care for a horse.

Teri Rockhold, Kings County Animal Shelter said, "Most of the stuff we run into is not an intent to neglect. A big part of it is monetary limitations and then other parts of it are just maybe some different ideas of what it takes."

Barbara Ackerman said, "It breaks my heart, it breaks my heart and anything I can do to help I do."

The Kings County Animal Shelter is urging anyone who can donate hay or other supplies to drop them off at the shelter.
