Three arrested in Merced County shooting

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

One person is in the hospital after he was shot in the back. Police say the shooting happened around nine o'clock Monday night near Winton Way and Walnut Avenue in Merced County.

Investigators say a 24-year old man was shot in his upper back with a large caliber handgun. Witnesses say they saw a jeep pull up and people got out of the car. Then they began shouting gang slurs and firing shots.

A short time later police spotted the vehicle and pulled them over. One of the suspects ran from the car but police arrested 18-year-old Sergio Lopez and 21-year-old Marcrudy Salinas for assault with a deadly weapon and for belonging to a street gang, among other charges.

A third suspect who is under 18 was also arrested and has been booked into juvenile hall without bail. The person who was shot is expected to recover from his injuries.
