VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Many residents in an upscale Visalia neighborhood are stunned after a 48-year-old man called 911 asking for help.
Police say when an officer showed up, the man answered his door, talked to the cop, and then shot at the officer.
Chief Colleen Mestas said, "The officer was shot at multiple times and was able to retreat away from the residence. He's lucky to be alive."
Chief Mestas says her officer shot back at the man and may have struck him. Just before 10 o'clock Tuesday night - the 48-year-old surrender to officers.
"He notified our dispatch that he wanted some EMS help," Chief Mestas said. "Convinced him to come out voluntarily."
Wayne Clark has lived in this area for more than 25 years. He says the stand-off didn't frighten him, but he was concerned for the safety of his neighbors and law enforcement. "You know you talk about a nice quiet neighborhood, but people are human. With that comes a lot of issues. It doesn't matter where you live or who you are. Those things happen."
On neighbor also says police used an armored car to evacuate several neighbors while the man was barricaded in the home.
The 48-year-old man has not been identified. But police say he now faces several charges including attempted murder of a police officer.
