2 men shot in Winton after chase

Thursday, July 05, 2012

Two men are in the hospital after being shot while driving through a Winton neighborhood. The shooting happened in front of more than a dozen outdoor family barbecues on Carlen Avenue and Morgan Court in Winton around 6 p.m. Wednesday night.

Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin said the two victims were driving a white sedan that was being chased by a van. One man was shot in the head, the other appeared to have shotgun pellet wounds to his back.

The sheriff says both were taken to hospitals in Modesto, and both were in stable condition. The shooting appears the shooting is gang related. "They have something to do with that house, again, we're trying to figure out who the players are and who belongs where, who doesn't. They associated with that house on the corner," said Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin.

Neighbors say they heard a car speed away from the scene after the gun shots. The sheriff says witnesses are staying quiet about the incident. No arrests have been made.
