Fresno heart surgeon shares artwork to inspire others

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno's first African American heart surgeon is hoping to inspire others with one of his many talents.

Dr. Fitzalbert Michael Marius shared his artwork during this show at the African American Historical and Cultural Museum this weekend. Most of his pieces are inspired by the Harlem Renaissance and his beloved wife. Marius says he painted many of the pieces during the civil rights movement.

At the time, he was also working to get more African American students to attend Fresno State and pursue a brighter future. He hopes his art will send a similar message.

Marius said, "I hope above all things that some of this will motivate our young people, particularly to keep on keeping on, regardless of the circumstances."

Marius emigrated from Panama to New York City before working in Fresno. He became a teacher and author of several books, as well as a heart surgeon.
