Fresno, CA (KFSN) -- With less than thirty days until Election Day many local churches are planning a last minute push to get Proposition 8 passed by voters. If approved, Proposition 8 would eliminate the right of same sex couples to marry.
A new ad campaign that just kicked off is igniting Christian leaders. Pastors from all over the valley met to educate themselves before they urge church members to cast a yes vote on Proposition 8.
Pastor Jim Franklin of Cornerstone Church explained the proposition to other members of the clergy, why he feels it threatens traditional marriage and what churches need to do to get involved.
Rev. Jim Franklin of Cornerstone Church said, "We've got 30 days to go, the polls are in our favor. But any coach will tell you, it's just halftime. We've got another half to play and we're going to come out and player harder than we've ever played before, we're going to speak the truth louder than we've ever spoke before we're going to stand up longer than we've stood up before."
Proposition 8 has quickly become one of the most heated battles in the state. Last month, the first statewide commercial hit airwaves urging Californians not take away the right of same sex couples to marry.
In the latest Exclusive Action News Poll Conducted by SurveyUSA, 47 percent of Californians support Prop 8, 42 percent say they will vote no and 10 percent are undecided.
Pastors left armed with knowledge to pass on to the faithful. Church leaders said they aren't out to put anyone down, just reinforce morals.
J.R. Coleman of Word of Faith Comm. Church said, "Homosexuality strikes all of us, me, my family, my friends, people in the church so we want to make sure we're sensitive about the issue because you can say something and it can come off the wrong way, so I want to make sure I'm very sensitive."
Jan Van Oosten of New Covenant Church said, "I'm going to talk to them from the perspective of a Christian responsibility to our country and our society and frame it that way."
Many churches are providing yard signs and registering voters to vote as part of efforts.
Each side has already raised at least 10 million dollars through August.
