October is Cancer Awareness Month and Fresno is set to host the Susan G. Komen Walk for a Cure Saturday morning.

What looks like a regular P.E. Class at Clovis East High School had a special significance this week, the color pink standing out next to Timber Wolf navy blue.

"Cancer's a serious deal," Bradley Newman said. "People overlook it sometimes so I'm glad when they have the run for everybody to get together and run for a cause."

Clovis East baseball coach Rigo Ledezma and 25 of his players are participating in Saturday's Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure for the sixth straight year, after Ledezma's wife Jamie was diagnosed with breast cancer while pregnant.

"She's a very nice lady," Beau Bower said. "Also their son too. Their whole family is nice in general. caring."

"Coach is one of my biggest inspirations," Seth Sarabian said. "He's a great guy. He does so much for all of us and his wife, and everything she went through - it's amazing all she did. I really respect both of those people and I wish the best for coach's wife."

Jamie Ledezma is now five years cancer free. Their son Blake is healthy, and coach Ledezma is passing on his story to his players, asking them to find someone in their lives they would like to run for.

"My mom's side of the family has it, so I push for it, I run because it's a good cause for everybody," Jarrett Kirby said. "I know a lot of people are affected by this."

Including the Clovis East math teacher for whom the boys dedicated this year's race, Joelle Mathews, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in July.

"She's a great math teacher," Seth Sarabian said. "I respect her a lot. All that she's gone through, and we're running for her name."

Raising money for a cure, raising awareness for prevention, all the while coming together as a team ahead of their season.

"Coach Ledezma's wife and Mrs. Mathews honor together - it brings us closer together," Bradley Newman said. "We have very good team chemistry so it just adds another element to our team."
