ABC7's Wayne Freedman has written and reported for most of his life. He published his first column in a Los Angeles area newspaper at the age of fourteen, and continued it through high school.
Wayne earned his Bachelors degree in Political Science from UCLA, and worked his way through college in the newsroom at KABC-TV in Los Angeles. He received a Masters Degree in Journalism at the University of Missouri in 1978.
Wayne came to San Francisco in 1981, first, at KRON-TV, after jobs at WLKY-TV and WAVE-TV in Louisville, and KDFW-TV in Dallas. He moved to CBS News in 1989, reporting and producing national feature stories for CBS This Morning.
Wayne arrived at ABC7 in 1991, and has covered a wide range of stories, from Russia's Second Revolution in 1992, to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
His anecdotal guidebook for reporters, IT TAKES MORE THAN GOOD LOOKS TO SUCCEED AT TELEVISION NEWS REPORTING, is required reading in major college journalism programs in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Wayne has conducted more than one-hundred writing and visual storytelling seminars for newsrooms and national organizations.
Wayne has been honored with more than forty Emmys by the Northern California Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He is a member of that organization's Silver Circle.
Wayne is also a dedicated, but frustrated golfer who has been known to shoot an occasional round at scratch. He is a member of the Golf Writers Association of America, having produced articles for several national publications. You'll find some of those pieces in the essay section of Wayne's Golf Addition, his golf page on this Web site. One of his favorites is The Boys in 15-B.
Wayne Freedman lives in Marin County with his wife and daughter.
