Santana Row Gucci Store Robbed
July 10 - KGO (KGO) -- Santana Row, the upscale shopping center in San Jose, is having serious problems with targeted theft. Today, robbers took nearly a dozen very expensive Gucci handbags from one store and nothing else.
Lt. Richard Calderon, San Jose Police Department: "We had a suspect enter inside the store and cause a diversion and take approximately nine handbags from the shelves."
And considering the cheapest Gucci bag starts around $1,500, the financial loss here was significant. No one inside was hurt, despite the robber spraying something in the air, the thief then ran out the door and into a waiting two-door blue Acura with paper plates.
ABC7's Carolyn Johnson: "Is there any suspicion that could have been stolen as well?"
Lt. Richard Calderon: "We're looking into that as well."
Construction work taking place across the street from Gucci was quite loud this morning with jack-hammering. Stores nearby closed their doors. No one saw or heard anything.
Tara O'Callaghan, Santa Row Store Manger: "It's just really scary, especially hearing that they put something in the air, whatever they did, you just worry about the well being of employees and stuff like that."
Tara O'Callaghan is manager of another store nearby.
Tara O'Callaghan: "This is the second time it's happened on the row recently so it concerns me as to what's going on and what we need to do to protect ourselves."
The Torneau watch store was targeted in April. Thieves made off with several watches valued at $15,000. The Gucci store has been hit at least three times before today. Nearby shopkeepers worry the row's close proximity to the freeway and the ability for drivers to pull up right in front of their stores could make them more vulnerable to thieves.
But San Jose Police call this robbery unusual for the row, a place officers say is quite safe.
Lt. Richard Calderon: "We've worked on a regular basis with the management and the security staff here at Santana Row to maintain the presence of San Jose Police and other security here. This is a rare occurrence."
And that's why police say they're jumping on this case.
