Aug. 14, 2007 (KGO) (KGO) -- How much do you think your expertise is worth? For some, the answer is a big good chunk of extra cash.
Scott Fitzgerald considers himself a computer whiz with more than 20 years experience. He's bringing in extra money by sharing his knowledge on two ask the expert websites.
Scott Fitzgerald, computer cyber-expert: "People usually call because they're trying to figure out something, and hopefully I'm familiar with it and I can guide them through."
More and more people are selling their expertise on line. San Francisco based Cnet says these special web sites are hot.
Rafe Needleman, Cnet "There are more companies that do this now and there are more interesting little niches."
Topics on these web sites range from tutoring to taxes to photo editing. It's a great way for experts to get their name out to a wider audience.
Rafe Needleman, Cnet: "It's a very nice way for somebody who has a professional level of expertise to leverage that expertise in what would otherwise be down time and make a few extra bucks."
Experts set their own fees and the websites take a commission. Users rate the experts who can turn high ratings into higher traffic and more cash. For now Needleman says its a good side business, and one that's likely to keep on growing.
Rafe Needlman, Cnet: "It's a pretty creative way for somebody who has expertise who is sitting at home to make money."
Scott Fitzgerald, computer cyber expert: "I think its going to be very big."
Of course, if you prefer to look for an expert rather than be one be sure to check out credentials and read the comments and ratings past users have left.
