SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The government is allowing the California chicken plants associated with the salmonella outbreak to stay open for now. But a consumer group is expanding the brand names of chicken products it says you should avoid.
Most of the products being recalled are Kirkland Signature Foster Farms rotisserie chickens, Kirkland Farm, and rotisserie chicken soup. Chicken leg quarters and chicken salad are also subject to the recall.
They were sold to consumers at the Costco store on El Camino Real in South San Francisco between September 11 and September 23.
Meanwhile, the salmonella outbreak connected to tainted Foster Farms chicken is still growing. There are now 317 cases in 20 states plus Puerto Rico. Nearly three-quarters of reported cases are in California.
The government is allowing the California chicken plants associated with the salmonella outbreak to stay open for now, but a consumer group is expanding the brand names of chicken products it says you should avoid.
There is a strong warning about buying or using chicken produced at the three Foster Farm plants linked to the salmonella scare. The chicken is sold under other brands besides Foster Farms.
Consumer Reports is advising against buying chicken under the following brands:
- Ralph's
- Safeway Farms
- Simple Truth Organic
- O Organics
- Eating Right
- Kirkland Signature
- Open Nature
Those plants can stay open for now after Foster Farms made changes to its slaughter and processing. Inspectors will monitor the plants and chickens from the Foster Farm plants for the next three months.
What to look for:
The USDA mark on suspect packages would read: P6137, P6137A and P7632.
