The California Department of Public Health has warned consumers not to eat certain brands of alfalfa sprouts due to tests that found Salmonella in some products.

Manufacturers of Salad Cosmo Alfalfa Sprouts, Always Fresh, and Alfa One Alfalfa Sprouts voluntarily recalled the products because of the possible contamination, according to the California Department of Public Health.

Salad Cosmo USA Corp. of Dixon recalled Salad Cosmo Alfalfa Sprouts, which are sold to retail grocery stores and wholesale distributors in the state, officials said. The sprouts in the 2.5-ounce containers with white and green labels and the clear 1-pound bags with blue labeling of Salad Cosmo Alfalfa Sprouts were recalled. The "use by" codes on the recalled packages were 0219, 0220, 0221, 0222, 0223, 0224, 0226, 0227, 0228, 0229, 0302, and 0303.

J.H. Caldwell and Sons, Inc. of Maywood recalled its Always Fresh and Alfa One Alfalfa Sprouts in 4-ounce and 5-ounce containers and plastic bags with product codes 202182, 202192, 202202, 202212, 202222, 202232, 202242, 202252, 202262, and 202272.

Infants, young children, and the elderly are reportedly susceptible to illnesses if exposed to Salmonella, according to officials. Symptoms of the bacterial infection include diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, and usually occur within one to four days of eating contaminated food.

One infected individual has been reported in Contra Costa, Orange, Riverside, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Two illnesses have been reported in San Francisco County.

Those who believe they are ill as a result of contaminated alfalfa sprouts should save the remaining sprouts, seal the container carefully, refrigerate it, and notify Environmental Health Services at (831) 454-2022.
