West Portal Elementary School is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its Chinese immersion program.

The plan to teach in both Cantonese and English was launched in 1984 and became the first of its kind in the country.

Today, Chinese immersion programs are so popular, that the San Francisco Unified School District recently opened its eighth one.

The original at west portal was supported by a grassroots effort by parents and other community members.
