SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The opening acts took the stage in Golden Gate Park Friday in what has become a Bay Area music tradition -- Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.
The festival is a very well-run event that features 90 acts over three days and it's all free. It's all taking place at Hellman Hollow, and the Lindley and Marx Meadows in Golden Gate Park. The music started at noon on Friday and for the next three days, music will be what the park is all about.
Multi-billionaire Warren Hellman, the bluegrass lover and philanthropist, passed away two years ago. But he bequeathed enough money to keep this three-day free concert in the park going for at least another decade, his sister told ABC7 News.
"He always said this was the most selfish thing he could possibly do because he loved being here. This was his idea of being in heaven. And I'm sure he's in heaven now listening to every single one of these acts," Nancy Hellman Bechtle said.
For music lovers, it's a mere heaven on the grass.
