Santa Clara County supervisors are unveiling a new program offering free hepatitis B screenings.

Free screenings and low-cost vaccinations will be offered twice a month at Stanford University's Asian Liver Center beginning in March.

The "Hep B Free" campaign targets Asian Pacific Islanders because that population bears a disproportionate burden of liver cancer caused by the virus.

You don't need to have health insurance to be screened and vaccinated.

Officials say there may be as many as 35,000 people in Santa Clara County who are infected with hepatitis B, but don't know it.
