A new study finds that even if x-rays and other health tests are normal, smokers may still have early cell damage that could lead to cancer.

Researchers at Cornell University found smokers lungs had cells that are associated with cancer, even when there is no clinical evidence that anything is wrong.

This doesn't mean all smokers will get lung cancer, just that smoking causes damage in seemingly healthy people.

The results of the study were published in the journal Stem Cell.
