S.F. Supervisor Ed Jew Targeted In FBI Corruption Probe

Monday, May 21, 2007

There are more revelations about the San Francisco supervisor targeted in a recent FBI raid. Supervisor Ed Jew is now facing scrutiny about whether he lives in the district he represents.

Supervisor Ed Jew was working with his wife in their Chinatown florist shop today, trying to maintain a business-as-usual attitude despite a growing controversy.

ABC7's Carolyn Tyler: "Can you tell me if you live at that address."

San Francisco Supervisor Ed Jew: "YES, I DO."

ABC7's Carolyn Tyler: "Do you live in the district?"

San Francisco Supervisor Ed Jew: "Yes, I Do."

City law requires supervisors to live in the district they represent. Jew listed this home in the Sunset neighborhood as his official residence.

San Francisco Supervisor Ed Jew: "I have very different hours. I get up at 4am, I'm out the door very, very early. I come back late."

Board president Aaron Peskin says there's no protocol to verify residency, but supervisors make a declaration under penalty of perjury.

Aaron Peskin, Board President: "my understanding of the law is if someone was not living in the district, he or she represented or a city-wide official was not living in San Francisco, the city attorney could bring a suit against that individual for violating the city charter."

Jew was elected to the board in November. The residency issue is the least of his problems on Friday. His City Hall office and private properties were searched by the FBI. He's the target of a criminal investigation into $40,000 dollars in cash

He told reporters he accepted from two men who wanted help with the city's permit process. Supervisor Peskin was there when the feds showed up at city hall.

Aaron Peskin, Board President: "It was a bunch of FBI agents going through cabinets, and papers, and computers."

Jew is not talking much about what happened, but showed us an email from a supporter.

ABC7's News Carolyn Tyler: "Is there anything you can tell me about the money?"

Supervisor Ed Jew: "We understand money was found in your safe here at the flower shop. I think, again, I want to have the attorney make that statement and clarify ok? "

Jew says tomorrow you'll find him at city hall as usual.
