Matt Gonzalez Will Not Run For Mayor Of San Francisco

Thursday, November 29, 2007

Former San Francisco supervisor and mayoral candidate, Matt Gonzalez, revealed to ABC7 News that he will not run against Mayor Gavin Newsom in the November election.

The decision by Gonzalez comes after weeks of speculation that he might challenge Newsom. Newsom narrowly beat Gonzalez in 2003.

Gonzalez told the I-Team's Dan Noyes how recent meetings with voters influenced him, saying, "I was also tapping into what I call a high degree of complacency. Many people don't want to hold Mayor Newsom responsible for the same ills that they criticize his administration for. I don't think that's common in politics, and I was surprised by that."

Many progressives in San Francisco saw Gonzalez as their best hope to unseat Newsom Nn november.

About 30 people have filed papers to run for mayor. The deadline to do so is August 10th.
