Harrison Street Off Ramp In SF Closes

Wednesday, September 07, 2005

Traffic ran pretty smoothly into San Francisco from the Bay Bridge during the morning commute Tuesday considering a heavily used off-ramp is now closed.

Harrison Street was closed because of the earthquake retrofit project ans will remain closed for three years. This is off the Bay Bridge's upper deck coming into San Francisco. This is the exit you used to take from the left lane. Now you'll have to use the Fremont Street ramp that drops you off on Folsom Street.

The exit sign is now covered up and barricades are up to remind drivers the exit is no longer an option. This ramp will be closed for three years. It will be demolished to make room for a wider stretch that will include wide shoulders.

Bart Ney, a Caltrans spokesman says, "It's all part of a larger earthquake retro fit of the western side of the Bay Bridge, the west approach. And the month of September is going to be very impactful to traffic coming in and out of the city of San Francisco." The impact refers to a series of closures that will be happening on the weekends this month.
