Tuesday, January 31, 2006

Family and friends paid their final respects today for a 20-year-old Marine from Tracy killed in Iraq.

Lance Corporal Brandon Dewey was killed by an IED in Iraq's Al-Anbar province a week ago last Saturday.

Hayward and Union City police officers carried his casket.

Dewey was born in Hayward and his father worked for the Union City police force for 25 years. He wanted to follow in his father's footsteps after leaving the marines.

Chief Randy Ulibarri, Union City Police Dept.: "We hereby declare Brandon Dewey an honorary police officer with the Union City Police Department."

Dewey is the fifth service member from Tracy to die in the Iraq war giving it one of the highest death rates per capita in California.

A sixth man, a civilian contractor from Tracy, died in Iraq last June.
