Jogger Struck By Car, Found In Ditch

Saturday, March 04, 2006

San Francisco police are looking for the driver who plowed down a woman who was jogging in the Presidio and then took off.

She was left unconscious on Thursday in a ditch with no identification. There was just one clue for police -- her iPod.

Park police didn't find one skid mark where the car slammed into Ashlyn Dyer. The driver left her sprawled face down in a ditch and unconscious. A park maintenance worker driving by spotted her moments later and called for help.

Ashlyn was hit about two miles from home, the Laurel Village apartment she shares with three roommates.

Camille Semeniuk, landlady: "Every morning she's out there running. It makes us all feel guilty because she's out there rain or shine. She's a real dedicated jogger."

And the Presidio is a magnet for runners and bicyclists -- uncongested compared to most of the city, a safe neighborhood, also boasting breathtaking views. Those like Ashlyn, who are regulars here, are shocked by what happened.

Carol Ogilvie, walker: "If it's seven in the morning and the sun's coming up, they probably just didn't see her."

Leslie Ogilvie, runner: "It's really disturbing that someone drove away though."

Also alarming was that Ashlyn was wearing only jogging clothes and went unidentified in the hospital for hours until investigators checked out the iPod she was carrying. Using the serial number, traced who it was registered to.

Detective Tony Depalma, U.S. Park Police: "First time, I didn't have a lot of knowledge about iPod's but we know more about them now and it was actually very useful."

It's a reminder to anyone exercising alone to carry ID.

Now that Ashlyn's been identified, family and friends are rushing to her bedside, hoping of course that she'll pull through and that whoever hit her and drove away is caught.

Charles Albert, landlord: "I don't know how you hit someone and not know it. It's outrageous. I hope everything is being done to find them."

U.S. Park police are pursuing every tip, every lead into that hit and run driver. Once notified, Ashlyn Dyer's parents were making their way to San Francisco from Phoenix and friends are at the hospital pulling for her too. At last word, she had not regained consciousness since the accident.
