Murder Case Witness Gunned Down

Thursday, May 04, 2006

A cold-blooded shooting has thrown an already confusing San Francisco murder case into near chaos. A key witness in a gang-related case, a young man supposedly being protected by the D.A.'s Office, was shot to death. It happened in the Bayview District.

The hit happened just after 10 a.m. Thursday morning inside this auto body shop on busy Bayshore Blvd.

Twenty-two-year-old Terrell Rollins was shot in the head and died at the scene. It's a mystery why he was there. He had been relocated from the city as part of the Witness Protection Program after coming forward in a murder case.

Rollins was set to testify against two suspected gang members who were indicted in April on charges of trying to murder him and murdering 21-year-old Arkeylius Collins. That shooting took place in the Bayview last fall.

District Attorney Kamala Harris says there are 22 people in the Witness Protection Program. While some may now question its effectiveness or cite this murder as reason not to cooperate with police, the D.A. says it works for those who follow the rules.
