Bayview Shooting Unrelated To Witness Murder

Monday, May 08, 2006

San Francisco police do not think this morning's fatal shooting of a man at a Bayview District auto body shop is related to the shooting death Thursday morning of a man at an auto body shop just a mile away, according to police spokeswoman Officer Maria Oropeza.

Today's victim has been identified as Robert Lee, 33, of San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Medical Examiner.

At around 10:40 a.m. today, police received a call reporting a shooting in the driveway of the San Francisco Auto Repair at 1401 Mendell St. When they arrived, they found Lee, who appears to have been unarmed, suffering several gunshot wounds.

He was declared dead at the scene, Oropeza said.

The auto body shop was open for business when Lee was shot. He was not a repair shop worker and nor is there anything that indicates that he was having a vehicle repaired at the shop, according to Oropeza.

Police have no vehicle or suspect description at this time. There are no apparent gang ties to today's shooting, she said.

The victim in Thursday's shooting, 22-year-old Terrell Rollins was reportedly moved outside San Francisco for his own safety and had been warned his life was at risk if he returned. He was a member of the San Francisco District Attorney's witness protection program.

He was killed at an auto body shop in the 200 block of Bayshore Boulevard, between Oakdale and Jerrold avenues, around 10:15 a.m.

Oropeza said it was possible that Thursday's shooting could deter witnesses to today's killing from coming forward.

But, she added, anyone with information about any police investigation can call the anonymous police tip line at (415) 575-4444. Calls to the tip line are free and do not display caller ID information, she said.
