Aug. 30 - KGO (KGO) -- The search for a missing five-month-old baby ended in tragedy, when police found the little girl's remains in a San Francisco park.
San Francisco police say the suspect in the baby's death is the father. Police sources tell ABC7 he led authorities to the body of little Camille Ferguson in a remote area of McLaren Park early this morning, north of the Cow Palace.
The father was the one who told police an elaborate kidnapping story. But early this morning police say he brought them to MacLaren Park and showed them where her body was.
Five-month-old Camille Ferguson's father told everyone his baby was snatched right out of the front seat of his car Sunday night while he was inside a convenience store, and everyone bought his story.
Sylvia Jones, Suspect's Cousin: "We all believed that, yes. As far as we know that's what happened. If there's anything more to it than we don't know about it."
But this morning the family is now dealing with the news that Camille probably wasn't kidnapped, but instead may have been killed by her own father.
Police say they picked up 24-year-old Anthony Theard yesterday afternoon saying part of his kidnapping story actually violated his parole.
Sylvia Jones, Suspect's Cousin: "As far as I know it's child endangerment for leaving her in the car, which was a mistake of his."
By midnight they say Theard agreed to lead them to Camille's body, which was in an area so remote that investigators couldn't thoroughly search it until this morning.
Capt. Stephen Tittel, S.F. Police Dept.: "It's actually dangerous, treacherous to get to. There's large equipment that will have to go down for video and it's just safer to do in the morning."
The news of Camille's death follows two days of an intense search around San Francisco's Mission District, which included fliers and search dogs.
Her shocked family stopped by the crime scene this morning. Her mother is said to be devastated.
