Problem Shuts Ferry Service In Alameda

Jan. 19 - BCN -- Ferry service to and from the Alameda Main Street Terminal will remain suspended through the weekend as engineers work to determine the best way to repair a problem with the pier that supports the passenger walkway to the ferry, according to a ferry spokesman.

Ferry service to and from Jack London Square in Oakland will run according to its regular schedule today, the spokesman reported.

Officials from the Alameda/Oakland Ferry are working with contractors this morning to determine the safest and most efficient way to return the Alameda Main Street Terminal to service, according to the spokesman.

Regular passengers of the Alameda/Oakland Ferry can also take the Alameda Harbor Bay Ferry, which will be accepting Alameda/Oakland Ferry boarding passes today, according to a recorded statement on the Alameda/Oakland Ferry information line.

According to ferry manager Ernest Sanchez, About 500 to 600 people pass over the pier each day.

Piling supporting the pier's walkway appeared to be out of alignment Thursday, he said. The piling was installed in 1990.

According to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Alameda Main Street Terminal operates between 6:10 a.m. and 9 p.m.
