Feb. 7 - BCN -- An explosion in an underground electrical vault caused gas to leak into the street in the area of Grant Avenue and Washington Street this afternoon, according to San Francisco Fire Department spokesman Ken Smith.
Smith said the two blocks nearest to the explosion have been evacuated and workers from Pacific Gas and Electric Co. are on scene attempting to fix the leak that has left a gaseous smell in the area.
A San Francisco police dispatcher said the explosion happened at around 2:34 p.m. "Manhole covers were blown" and "lights are out" in or near the area, according to the dispatcher.
