More Human Bones Found In Santa Cruz

Saturday, February 17, 2007

Investigators with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office found more human bones today in the same area where a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. contractor discovered human bones earlier this month, according to sheriff's Sgt. Ed Wise.

"We know they're human bones, we believe it may be a femur," Wise said.

The search began yesterday and continued today at the Bear Creek site, Wise reported, where the bones were discovered some time this morning. He added that the search is still under way.

"We'll be out here with the assistance of the sheriff's search and rescue team until late in the day," Wise said.

The first discovery of the bones was made around 3:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at Bear Creek Road by a PG&E contractor who was checking power lines and making sure that trees and bushes were cleared. As the contractor walked through the area checking the lines, he kicked up the bones, which he correctly identified as human, Wise said.

The bones remain unidentified but may be those of an adult approximately 16-24 years old, according to information provided to the sheriff's office by a forensic expert, Wise reported.

According to Wise, the bones found today are believed to be related to the bones found on Feb. 5 and Feb. 6.

So far, neither a skull nor pelvis bone are among the remains recovered, according to Wise, which might make it more difficult to identify the remains.

There are no plans to close Bear Creek Road while the investigation is under way and traffic should not be affected, the sheriff's office reported.

Depending on how long today's search goes, Wise said a search crew may conduct another search Sunday.

Wise said a command center is set up at the Presentation Center located at 19480 Bear Creek Road in Los Gatos.
