Fatal Sunset District Fire Likely Accidental

Monday, April 09, 2007

One person is dead and several people have been injured in an overnight fire at a home in San Francisco's Sunset District.

A fire that broke out today at the home of a family in the Sunset District killing one man and injuring three others, seems to have started accidentally, according to San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman Catherine Alba-Swanson.

Alba-Swanson said investigators remain at the scene, trying to determine what caused flames to erupt at the two-story single family home at 1958 Sloat Blvd. and 37th Ave. at around 3:20 a.m.

One man is in critical condition after sustaining second and third degree burns to his hands, feet, and airway and has burns over 23 percent of his body, Alba-Swanson said. "It's not clear if he is going to make it or not," she added.

According to Alba-Swanson, two women also sustained injuries, one receiving a laceration to the head, and the other suffering from smoke inhalation.

"Supposedly there were people jumping out of windows," Alba-Swanson said, explaining how the woman may have been cut.

According to Alba-Swanson, both women are expected to survive and no firefighters were injured in the blaze.
