Bay Area Mayors Meet, Discuss Challenges

Thursday, April 19, 2007

Mayors from around the Bay Area came together today to talk about the biggest challenges we all face -- among them, housing availability and affordability.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom says the city is going through one of the biggest housing expansions in history. But even with all the new units, Newsom says a lot more needs to be done.

Mayor Gavin Newsom, San Francisco: "We're still tens of thousands of units behind and I don't think it's going to have a real impact, even all this new housing construction on the affordability in San Francisco because of the supply and demand model."

Other issues discussed included transportation and health.

All agreed it's important for Bay Area cities to speak with a unified voice.
