S.F. Supervisor Ed Jew Still Fails To Prove Residency

Monday, June 11, 2007

San Francisco's City Attorney is giving embattled supervisor Ed Jew one last chance to prove he actually lives in the district he represents.

Supervisor Jew says he complied with city attorney Dennis Herrera's request to turn over documents proving he lives in his Sunset District home. But In a letter to Jew's attorney, the city attorney says what he got from Jew doesn't prove that at all and he gave the supervisor until this Friday, four days -- to come up with the documents.

The city attorney's letter says Ed Jew did not fully respond to his request for documents that would prove he lives in his electoral district. Last Thursday, the supervisor handed over documents he says proves he lives there, specifically at 2450 28th Avenue.

To qualify to run, candidates have to live in their district at least 30 days before they file. But neighbors have reported the house appeared empty.

City records show the house had no water service from March until September of last year -- two months after he would have been required to live in his district.

Public records show, Jew owned a home in Burlingame until 2001, when he transferred the deed to his wife Lisa. Neighbors near this house say they've seen a lot of Jew, his wife and their young daughter.

According to the city attorney, Jew provided tax returns for 2005, not for last year, the crucial period. Dennis Herrera also writes, the supervisor failed to give him telephone, cable service or utility bills for his 28th avenue house.

The city attorney adds, most of the documents Jew provided were for his flower shop in Chinatown. The letter says examples of residency might include statements about where the Jew's kept their household belongings, clothing, house wares, jewelry and family photographs, or proof of magazine or newspaper subscriptions.

Also among Herrera's requests -- he wants to know if Jew got a homeowners tax exemption and renter's tax credits. The city attorney also wants to interview the supervisor -- all of this, again by Friday.

Jew did not return our calls, and neither -- nor did his two attorneys.
