S.F. Officer Injured While Directing Traffic

Thursday, July 26, 2007

An investigation is underway after a San Francisco police officer was hit by a truck while directing traffic. The incident led to a police chase that ended on the other side of the bay.

An officer was hit, shots were fired, there was a chase - it was pretty intense. Officers finally caught the suspect in Oakland at Interstate 880 and Broadway. There was a chase for about 10 miles until the suspect stopped there. There is a bullet hole in the side of the suspect's truck. A San Francisco officer shot at him back in San Francisco - that is where the whole incident began.

Investigators say the suspect wasn't obeying the officer who was directing traffic at the Bay Bridge on ramp at Essex and Harrison and then the truck hit the officer. When another officer saw this happening he shot at the suspect.

Police say it is upsetting how people can treat officers who are directing traffic.

Sgt. Arlen Vanderbilt, San Francisco Police Dept.: "Unfortunately it is not that unusual for people to not give adequate regard for officers that are out here. Fortunately it is unusual for an officer to be hit. So I think they are upset, but we are relieved that the officer apparently is fine."

The officer is ok he was treated and released from the hospital this morning. Police have not released any information about the officer or the suspect; they also are not talking about the officer who shot at the suspect.

The scene has been cleared, it happened at about 1:30 am this morning at Essex and Harrison. The on ramp is still closed because of construction going on the bridge, but investigators have left the scene.
