SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jul. 26, 2007 (BCN) -- A water main that ruptured this afternoon has resulted in the closure of Homestead Road between Kennewick Drive and South Mary Avenue, Sunnyvale spokesman John Pilger said.
The rupture occurred around noon, creating a rectangular gap in the middle of Homestead Road that is 10 to 15 feet wide and about 6 feet deep, Pilger said.
Customers within the parameter of El Camino Real, Homestead Road, Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road and Wolfe Road can expect to experience low water pressure and even see dirty water, Pilger said.
He said that the dirty water is safe and should not be a cause of concern.
About 400 feet of Homestead Road has been damaged.
Sunnyvale's public works department is responding to the incident but the street is expected to remain closed through the night.
Pilger said that there is no flooding and that most of the water was filtered through storm drains.
The incident occurred near Homestead High School, which is not in session.
The cause of the main rupture is not yet known.
