SAN FRANCISCO, Sep. 25, 2007 (KGO) (KGO) -- So who is Carmen Chu, and what qualifies her to take over for Ed Jew?
She is now the designated representative for San Francisco's "District Four," the Sunset neighborhood, and now the youngest supervisor on the board.
Carmen Chu took her seat as supervisor attending her first board meeting. While the mayor was introducing her, Ed Jew's name was removed from his office door. Now, it was Supervisor Chu's office. "I have a passion for public policy. It's why I came to San Francisco. I've worked here for three years and I really look forward to bring the skills that I have learned, the relationships that I have built here," said Chu. She is 29 years old. Chu has worked with Newsom since 2004 as a budget analyst. Since last year, she has served as Deputy Director for Policy and Finance. The length of time she will remain the District Four supervisor is up for discussion. "This is obviously an interim appointment. Whether or not she chooses to run in the future, nobody knows, including Ms. Chu," said Aaron Peskin, Board of Supervisors President. The mayor could have appointed Ron Dudum, the man who came in second in San Francisco's rank choice voting. Mayor Newsom, though, is well aware that District Four is 53 percent Asian, according to the 2000 census. "We're a city with tremendous diversity. In a city that deserves representation not only from the Asian community, but particularly the Chinese community, I think it is very important to have that representation," said Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Mayor. Dudum took offense to that, though we saw him moving aside his regular supporters to make room for two Asian supporters. He asked them to stand behind him, while he announced he will eventually run again for Supervisor of District Four. In the meantime, Chu vowed to reach out to all voters of District Four. "I think the best you can do is go out and meet people and really try to understand the issues they are concerned with. And so that's the best that I can do," said Chu. That would include supporters of Ed Jew.Sponsored Content
