S.F. street may have cameras installed

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Bicycle riders and local politicians in San Francisco want to install high-tech cameras to catch drivers making illegal turns at a busy intersection.

But installing those cameras will likely require a series of hearings. Many drivers ignore the "no right turn" sign at Market Street and Octavia Boulevard.

They end up driving through a bike lane and crosswalk on their way to a ramp that connects city streets to the Bay Bridge and Highway 101 to the Peninsula.

"As you can see we've done as much as we can here in the City to prevent people from taking the right turn, but it is still one of the most dangerous intersections in the city," said Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, (D) San Francisco.

Octavia Boulevard opened in 2005. It replaced part of the Central Freeway that was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
