REDWOOD CITY, CA (KGO) -- All five lanes of Highway 101 in Redwood City are moving for the first time since Tuesday. A gas tanker accident had shut down all lanes of the freeway. The CHP re-opened all the lanes at about 5:20 am.
Northbound lanes were closed Wednesday at 9:00 pm for repair work. Crews used rollers to re-pave the numbers one and two lanes. A tanker accident spilled 2,500 gallons of gas that pooled over into the lanes and ate through the rubberized black top.
Crews dug up the lanes and aired them out to let the gas vapors release. This was needed because there were concerns that a spark would ignite the vapors and cause an explosion.
"You could smell gas everywhere. It dissolved the street, and it was good that no body happened to throw a cigarette out the window," said San Mateo resident Eric Braunberger.
On Wednesday, environmental cleanup crews scooped up piles of soil that absorbed the 2,500 gallons of gas that spilled on Tuesday onto the highway. San Mateo County Environmental Services said the spill did not leak into the bay, but there will be extensive monitoring to make sure it didn't seep into the ground water.
The early morning commute has been smooth.
